ÁINE COLLECTION

An exhibition collection of handmade furniture
from reclaimed Cedar, Fir, and Koto wood.
Áine is an Irish name that means “radiance”.

Created to communicate the reclaimed material focus of the studio.
Preventing wood from being left to sit or sent to landfill.

Telling a material story through a collection out of reclaimed lumber.

I Inspected the lumber that was being tossed and contemplated design options within the dimensions and contstraints of that stock.

The wood selected was viewed through the lense of its context within my thesis exhibition.  Image: Alexander Velgan

The form language of the pieces follows the austere yet spiritual nature of the exhibition
+ the distinct material constraints.

I created the brief around simplicity of working methods, utilizing traditional woodworking methods to fabricate the collection pieces.

All of the lumber used in creation of the Áine collection was on the brink of being thrown away.
Giving new life to material and extending their lifetime was of tremendous importance.
