FINDING CALM

Brief:

Design a spatial experience that provides
calmness through light and space.

Spatial Design / Human-Centered Design / CMF Design

Finding Calm is a spatial experience involving light sound, and space
to provide a moment of calm and meditation amidst the chaos of everyday life.

I conducted ethnographic research to inform my design decisions.

I interviewed Educator and Dancer, Jason Mcdole, who experiences hearing loss and tinnitus.

From our conversation I gained insight into the exhaustion he feels by the end of the day
and how daily meditation helps him balance this fatigue.

How can a space replenish an individual’s balance?

I focused on designing for calm and relaxation through a spatial experience. Jason’s need for regaining a sense of peace amidst chaos informed my aesthetic decisions in color, form, and space.

The dynamic form lends itself to be used for taking back a few moments of your day.
You can walk on through, or you can stop for a minute or two.

Determining Calm Through Sketching

I explored and iterated on different possibilities for providing calm
in a way that meets the needs of individuals with tinnitus or hearing loss.

I Decided upon an organic, flowing form that allows
for the space to open up and narrow as one moves through it.

Psychology of Color

What inspired the hues of calm?

I looked to nearby environments and comforting imagery that already acted as a space of solace, such as the beach during sunset or the cliffs during golden hours. The feeling created by these moments informed my moodboarding process.

Material

Frosted Acrylic
Programmable LED panelling

The frosted, opaque material allows light to pass through it while maintaining dimming capability. Programmable LED panels can support visual light effects within the space, with the potential for updatability.

Sculpting Calm

Iterations in Gravity Sketch to determine a form that communicates calm and openess.

Prototyping Calm

I built scaled down prototypes with paper and foam in order to determine the structures proportions.

After many prototypes were made, I made a final Solidworks model to be printed in FDM.
